How to light a wood stove as quickly as possible

Lighting a wood stove can sometimes be tricky. However, with a high-quality stove that is properly installed and the right wood, starting your fire is easier than you think. We use the Swiss method.

The Swiss method is an efficient way to quickly ignite a wood stove. Here’s a step-by-step guide:

What You Need:

  • Dry, well-split firewood
  • Kindling (smaller wood pieces)
  • Firelighters
  • Matches or a lighter

Preparation:

Place a layer of logs (about fist-thick) at the bottom of the stove. Ensure enough space for air circulation.

Stack the Wood:

Place smaller pieces of wood crosswise on top of the logs to create an air-permeable structure.

Add Kindling:

Put firelighters or crumpled newspaper on top of the wood stack. Distribute the paper evenly.

Light the Fire:

Use a long match or lighter to ignite the kindling. Ensure the paper catches fire properly.

Let the Flame Develop:

Wait until the flames reach the kindling and start burning well. Then close the stove door.

Regulate Air Supply:

Your stove may need more oxygen at the start. Open the air vent to improve circulation and ensure a steady, strong flame. You may need to slightly reduce airflow once the fire is established.

As the fire strengthens, reduce the air supply to control combustion and maintain the desired heat output. Ideally, close the vent completely to maximize fuel efficiency.

Always follow safety guidelines and keep the stove door closed when not in use. The Swiss method ensures an efficient start, but safety remains the top priority.
