Answers to frequently asked questions

How should I prepare my Lobbe (compact) stove for the chimney sweep?

It’s time for your annual chimney sweep! Keeping your wood-burning stove’s chimney clean is crucial for safety. Buildup of soot and creosote can create dangerous conditions.

Why Sweep Your Chimney?

Regular chimney sweeping offers several benefits:

Safety: Soot and creosote, a highly flammable substance, can accumulate in your chimney. Regular sweeping prevents dangerous buildups and reduces the risk of chimney fires.

Efficiency: A clean chimney improves draft, meaning smoke is removed more efficiently. A clogged chimney requires more fuel to produce the same amount of heat, increasing your energy costs.

Longevity: A clean chimney lasts longer. Soot and creosote can damage the chimney lining and cause rust.

Environment: Efficient burning reduces harmful emissions.

Preparing Your Stove

Ensure the stove is completely cool before the sweep. Follow these steps:

  1. Open the door.
  2. Remove ashes from the stove.
  3. Remove the ash grate.
  4. Remove the heat shield (top):
    • Gently lift the shield.
    • Slide it slightly to the left.
    • Lower the right side.
    • Carefully remove the shield.
  5. Remove the flue pipes (optional but recommended):
    • Push the part of the flue pipes near the window all the way up.
    • Pull the flue pipe towards you to remove it from the holes.
    • Gently lower and remove the flue pipe.
    • Repeat for the other flue pipe.

A Friendly Gesture

Offer refreshments to the chimney sweep, such as coffee and pastries. This small gesture is appreciated and can encourage them to do an even better job. This is also a good time to schedule your next appointment.

Excessive Buildup?

If the chimney sweep finds excessive creosote, it might be time to review your wood choice. Burning damp or unsuitable wood can lead to incomplete combustion and increased creosote buildup.
