Answers to frequently asked questions

Can you install a wood stove just anywhere?

If you’ve landed on this page, you’re probably wondering if you’re allowed to install a wood stove in your situation. Proper installation is crucial for both your health and the well-being of your surroundings. For this reason, installing a wood stove is subject to laws and regulations.

Installing a Wood Stove at Home

At a national level, laws and regulations govern the installation of wood stoves in homes. These are outlined in the Building Decree for Living Environment (Bbl), designed to ensure safety, health, sustainability, and the functionality of wood stoves. While the Bbl primarily applies to new builds, many of its rules also apply to existing homes.

Smoke Gas Ventilation

Regulations have been established to minimize smoke nuisance:

  • The smoke gas ventilation system (typically a chimney) must extend above the roofline. Wall-mounted vents are not permitted for wood stoves.
  • The outlet must be at least 1 meter away from the property boundary.
  • Depending on the roof pitch and chimney position, the outlet must extend at least 0.5 meters above the roof ridge. Specific requirements depend on local regulations and individual circumstances.
  • The capacity of the ventilation system must be sufficient for effective combustion. For new or renovated homes, capacity is determined using NEN 2757, while NEN 8757 applies to existing homes.

Air Supply for Combustion

For safety, an adequate supply of combustion air is essential. For appliances with a total capacity of up to 130 kW (the category most wood stoves fall into), this is determined using NEN 1087, which outlines ventilation standards for buildings.

EcoDesign for New Stoves

New wood stoves must comply with the European EcoDesign Directive. The latest guideline, EcoDesign 2022, mandates:

  • A minimum efficiency of 75%.
  • Maximum fine particulate emissions of 40 milligrams per cubic meter.
All new Leenders wood stoves meet these EcoDesign 2022 standards.

Local Regulations

In addition to national laws, local regulations may apply to wood stove use. Be sure to check with your municipality for specific rules in your area.

Wood stove in the garden, is that allowed?

Do you want to use a wood stove in your garden? Specific laws and regulations apply to this as well.

Regulations for Garden Wood Stoves

According to Article 10.2 of the Environmental Management Act, it is prohibited to burn waste materials. Therefore, only untreated and unpainted wood may be burned in a wood stove.

Whether you can use a wood stove in your garden depends on your municipality. These rules are laid out in municipal regulations. Every municipality is required to establish an environmental vision, which includes rules for outdoor burning.

Rules for Wood Stoves in Covered Spaces

A covered area is considered a structure, meaning the regulations in the Building Decree for Living Environment (Bbl) also apply. This includes requirements for smoke ventilation, air supply for combustion, and adherence to EcoDesign standards. Be sure to also check for specific municipal regulations.
